I work with families with children and adults of all ages and across all generations, living together or apart.

For individual therapy clients who are between 16 and 18 years old, monthly family therapy is a vital part of the therapeutic process.

As a Bowen family systems therapist I explore the relational dynamics and interactions patterns between family members and empower adult family members to enhance their level of differentiation within the family system.

Issues that bring families to therapy include:

  • Parenting issues

  • Child and adolescent behaviour

  • Blended families

  • Divorce and separation

  • One member affected by chronic illness

  • Children and adolescents with mental health problems

  • Changes in family life

  • Transition periods

  • Extended family issues

  • Traumatic event or death

  • Significant life changes

Benefits of family therapy

  • Improve listening, communication and negotiation skills
  • Enhance relationship dynamics
  • Increase the separation and individuation of family members
  • Establish healthy boundaries and develops appropriate responsibility
  • Strengthen the relationship between parents
  • Find creative ways forward with family challenges
  • Improve symptoms and functioning of children

Underlying Principles

The family unit as client

The focus of family therapy sessions is on the functioning of the family unit. Individual symptoms (particularly in children) are often an expression of a struggling family unit. Without blame I will bring into focus the relationship dynamics and patterns expressing themselves and explore how to adjust and refine your interactions.

Parent Power

The quality of parental presence and interaction is the key factor in family functioning. Having just one parental figure who is motivated and focused enough to commit to enhancing their level of differentiation creates ripples across the whole system leading to entire family improvements. I will support, empower and equip you to make those changes.

Get the Big Picture

Patterns of family behaviours and interactions replicate across the generations and are influenced by other personal and professional relationship systems. I will invite you to gain this bigger perspective which will reduce blame, increase empathy and understanding as well as increasing your flexibility to make changes in the present.

How much do you charge?

Fees vary depending on location and are between £165 and £250 per session.

How many sessions will we need?

Initially you will have 2 assessment sessions to explore what has brought the family to therapy and gain a general overview of family dynamics and a history of family life. This will also give you a sense of what family therapy with me is like.

Together we will identify a focus of the work and agree how we will work together, this will enable us to know when therapy has reached its goal and conclusion. Some families just need a few sessions, others may meet for more than a year.
